Home Page is a project funded by the department of Communities and Local Government under their Timely Information for Citizens project. This is part of the UK response to the EU directive on the re-use of public sector information.
The concept for the national work is that public bodies have a lot of data which could be used by the private sector and community groups to build new services and businesses such as those shown on . To support that there is now a national website where you can download linked data sets from on www.data.gov.uk. The overall work is being led by Sir Tim Berners Lee and the local government element is being led by Paul Davidson who has been seconded into CLG from local government.
Norfolk Homepage uses web technologies based on the open source Wordpress system to pull in information relating to a local community from other webpages using rss or other web services. All of the updates from the websites come into an aggregator based on the Wordpress content management system. The "curators" - who are librarians - then decide which to promote tom the top story slot in the different categories and any to delete because the content breaks our guidelines on acceptable use.
Norfolk has booked a session for SMEs and community groups on April 7th with Paul Davidson to tell them about the national work and get info from them about the priorities for making NCC and other local authority information available as linked data sets.
